Philosophy / Program:
At Discovery House, we offer a
balanced, quality program with enthusiastic, experienced and supportive staff
who believe in a positive approach to teaching young children. We also
believe that children are active learners and that they all learn in different
ways and at their own rates. In mixed groupings of three and four year
olds, we strive to meet each individual child's needs and potentials in all
areas of their development. A nurturing, safe environment encourages strong
self-concepts through a program including art, music, drama, language arts and
math foundation skills, social studies, science, social interaction, physical
activities, intellectual stimulation, concept development and language
enrichment. Curiosity, discovery, and empathy are encouraged. With a
curriculum based on sound child development principles and an appreciation of
how children learn through rich and challenging play experiences, we offer a
creative environment with a good balance between teacher-directed and
child-directed activities. We realize that children learn and play to make
sense of their world and need a wide variety of experiences to help them do
this. Our centre prides itself in offering an exciting program that
promotes acceptance and diversity, social responsibility, artistic and creative
development, physical strength and coordination, good health and well-being,
imagination, and teamwork. We understand that future happiness and
academic success rely on solid foundations of social and emotional competencies
and we integrate those skills into all areas of our curriculum on a daily basis.
