Receipts

Income Tax Receipts will be issued at the beginning of February for the previous year.

Arrival

Staff will sign children in upon arrival.  An attendance binder is kept for this purpose.  A staff member must acknowledge arrival before you leave the premises.  Children must not be sent into the room alone.  The Child Care Centre will not be responsible for any child who is not brought to the classroom by the parent and acknowledged by a staff member.

The Child Care Centre offers a carefully structured Early Childhood Education Program.  In order for your child to benefit from the full program, we ask that your child arrive by 9:00 a.m.  If your child will not be attending on a certain day, the Supervisor must be notified.

Departure

Parents are to alert a staff member to the departure of their child from the Centre or the playground.  All children must be signed out by a staff member in the attendance binder.

Children will not be released in taxis or sent home with any unauthorized person.  Only persons listed on the child’s application form are allowed to pick up the child.  If someone other than the authorized pick up person is scheduled to pick up the child, the parent must phone the Centre or send a signed note of consent.  The authorized pick up person must show staff photo Identification in order for the child to be released to them.  Children are not allowed to arrive or depart unaccompanied.

This Centre has a fee for “late pick-up”, that is picking up your child after closing time.  The late fee is meant as a penalty, not an added service.  It is expected that parents will respect our closing hours.  Parent(s) will be asked to sign the Late Pick-up Form acknowledging that they were late picking up their child.  If we are unable to reach you one hour after closing time the Police Department and Children’s Aid will be contacted.    Please make sure that you contact numbers are up-to-date.

Nutrition

Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre provides a hot and nutritious lunch and one morning and afternoon snack prepared fresh on site by the child care centre cook.  Our food program exceeds the Ministry requirements and is designed to follow the Canadian Food Guide.  Weekly Menus are posted outside the kitchen.  Parents need to inform us at the time of registration if the child has any food allergies or restrictions.  Please do not bring food from home as other children may be allergic to ingredients.

Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre is a peanut/nut free school in order to better service the needs of all families.  We strive to provide a safe and secure learning environment.

Medication

The ECE teacher in each room will be assigned to administer the prescribed medication.  All medication administered needs to be in its original container or is accompanied by a physician’s note and the Child Care’s “Medication Form” filled out by the child’s parent or legal guardian.  The note must include the date, child’s full name, type of medication, amount and times that the medication is to be given.  All medication is kept in a locked container.

For everyone’s benefit, children who are sick will not be admitted to the Child Care Centre.  A child will not be admitted if they have a communicable disease or show signs of fever, diarrhea or vomiting.  It is the Child Care policy that a child must be symptom free for 24 hours before he/she is re-admitted to the Child Care Centre.  In the case of head lice, a child is not to attend the Child Care Centre until treated and is completely nit-free.

If your child becomes ill during the day, the parent or emergency contact will be notified and the child will need to be picked up from the Child Care Centre.  A physician’s note is required for re-admittance to the Child Care Centre after a lengthy illness, communicable disease or if the Centre should be in doubt regarding the health of the child.  To protect everyone’s health, smoking is prohibited at all times in the Child Care Centre and outside Playground area.

Children are required by the Day’s Nursery Act to be outside for at least two hours per day (weather permitting).  In spring and summer, the Child Care Centre will monitor the outdoor air quality (smog) and the intensity of the sun.  When the Ontario Ministry of Environment issues a Smog Advisory Alert, it is the policy of Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre that the children will not participate in outdoor play.

During the spring and summer months, Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre practices Sun Safety by limiting time spent in the sun during the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Activities are set up in shaded areas and children are all required to wear a hat.  Parents are asked to provide SPF 15 or higher sunscreen.  If a child does not have sunscreen available, it will be provided by the Child Care Centre.  If the UV index is too high, it is the policy of Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre that the children will not participate in outdoor play.

During the winter months, Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre practices the Extreme Weather Alert.  When the temperature and wind chill is combined at -25C the children will stay indoors.  When the temperature is -15C without the wind chill, outdoor time will be shortened.  Alternatively, children will be taken on a short neighbourhood walk.  Parents are asked to provide hats, mittens, boots, snow pants and a warm jacket for their children in the winter months.

Clothing

Each child should have a permanent backpack at the Child Care Centre that will contain a full change of clothing.  All clothing needs to be labeled with the child’s full name.  The Child Care Centre cannot be responsible for lost clothing or jewelry.  Please send your child in seasonally appropriate attire which will not prohibit his/her full and comfortable participation in our program.

Please do not place any food or drink products in the backpack, or any toys.  Other children may be allergic to the ingredients in the food/drink, and toys from home may cause too many unnecessary tears if they get lost, misplaced or claimed by other children.

Diapers

Parents are expected to provide adequate supply of diapers and wipes for their child.  Parents will be notified to bring in more diapers and wipes when their supply runs low.

Toilet Training

When a child is ready for toilet training, parents will be asked to provide plenty of training pants.  It is the parent's responsibility to take home wet or soiled clothing to be laundered.

Bed Clothing

Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre provides each child with an individual cot labeled with the child’s name.  A bed sheet is also provided.  The Child Care Centre disinfects the cots each week and changes the bed sheets.

Each parent is asked to provide a child-sized blanket for their child’s cot.  Parents are to pick-up this blanket each Friday, launder it and return it on Monday.

Accidents

Minor cuts and bruises that are handled by the staff are recorded in an Accident Report and kept on file.  When the child is picked up, parents are notified of the accident and are required to sign the Accident Report.

Accidents or illnesses requiring medical attention will be immediately reported to the parents.  It is the parent’s responsibility to come to the Child Care Centre and transport the child to the Doctor or hospital.  In the event of an emergency, the Child Care Centre will call 911 for immediate medical care.  A staff member will accompany the child to the hospital if necessary.    The parents will also be notified and requested to meet staff at the hospital.

Under no circumstances is a staff member to drive the child to the hospital in their own car.

Moving Children to the Next Age Group

As the Child Care Centre only has a certain number of spaces in each age group, there may not be a space available when it is time for your child to move up.  If there is no available space for your child, you will be given at least 4 weeks written notice to withdrawal your child and make other arrangements.

Behaviour Management

Children will be encouraged to verbalize their aggression rather than resort to physical action.  However if a child does resort to physical aggression, the situation will be discussed with the child so that he/she may gain the understanding of the problem.  If another child is involved, both children will be taken aside and the situation discussed with them.   If the dispute has reached a point where discipline has to be taken the child will be removed from the situation until he/she has calmed down and then discussion can take place.

The supervisor will monitor the Behaviour Management practices of staff that provide care in the Centre.  The supervisor will complete the “Supervision of Children Behaviour Management” form every four months for each staff member.  Each staff member will read and sign the Child Care’s Behaviour Management and Behaviour Contravention Policy annually.  Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre expects staff to use positive behaviour when dealing with the children in their care.

Excursions

As part of the daily programs, children will take part in supervised activities in the immediate vicinity of the Child Care Centre such as public libraries, walking tours of the neighbourhood and local stores.  Signed permission forms will be required for excursions outside the immediate community.

Parent Involvement

Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre encourages parental involvement.  There is an open door policy so that parents can set appointments with their child’s teacher or the Child Care Supervisor to discuss any issues as they see fit or related to the centre and their child’s development.  Parents are also invited to visit classrooms, participate in fund raising events and field trips.  Though parent involvement is welcome, they are subject to the same expectations and standards as our staff.  Parent bulletin boards are located throughout the centre, so please check for updates including menu changes, special event notices and other pertinent information.

Child Abuse

Fan-Tastic Scholars Child Learning Centre is committed to taking a proactive position regarding the prevention of child abuse.  Our staff is legally responsible for reporting any suspicions of child abuse to the Children’s Aid Society.  Staff is not responsible for proving whether or not abuse has occurred.  It is the responsibility of the Children’s Aid Society to investigate and decide on the appropriate action to be taken on behalf of the child.
